Segundo David Boyden o son file, até mais ou menos 1800, na música instrumental significava uma longa e sustentada nota, sem variação dinâmica. Mas, a partir de então, com o surgimento da escola francesa de violino, os instrumentistas passaram a adotar o termo son filé também para uma nota longa sustentada, mas com um crescendo e diminuendo. Hoje em dia, para todas as cordas friccionadas, violino, viola, violoncelo e contrabaixo, significa qualquer estudo com notas longas, no o intuito de praticar a boa sonoridade. Segundo Leopold Auer, professor nada mais nada menos que Heifetz, Mischa Elman e outros, o son filé, assim com o detaché, é o alicerce da técnica de arco. Do mesmo modo que escalas e arpejos “estruturam” a mão esquerda, o son filé “estrutura” a produção sonora do violino. Seu domínio deve-se a um entendimento fundamental, necessário, dos três elementos básicos da produção sonora: a pressão da arcada, o ponto de contato da crina em relação ao cavalete e a velocidade da arcada. Tudo é controlado pelos dedos da mão direita que, com a devida sensibilidade, compreende a vibração da corda transmitidas pela madeira do arco. A escola francesa de violino sempre demonstrou muita preocupação com a produção sonora, com o arco em geral. Não é à toa que os 42 Estudos de Kreutzer começam com um exercício de son filé, em Adagio sostenuto, lento, muito lento, com dois compassos em ligado e crescendo num incrível desafio ao controle da sonoridade. Para mim, o mais difícil dos 42 exercícios, com certeza. Assim como Kreutzer e 40 anos depois, Mazas abre os seus 30 Estudos Especiais, num exercício muito similar, em Largo e que também, no meu entender, é extremamente desafiador. Everything is controlled by the fingers of the right hand which, with proper sensitivity, understands the vibration of the string transmitted by the wood of the bow. The French violin school has always been overly concerned with sound production, with the bow technique in general. No wonder that Kreutzer's 42 Studies begin with an exercise of son filé, in Adagio sostenuto, slow, very slow, with two bars on crescendo, in an incredible challenge to control the sound. For me, the hardest of the 42 exercises for sure. Like Kreutzer and 40 years later, Mazas opens his 30 Special Studies, in a similar exercise, in Largo and which, in my opinion, is also extremely challenging.
