The auto engineers usually had very good engineering and solutions to problems, but cost cutting played a large role in the final decision for many components. This video discusses a decision by an automaker to build engines with a cheaper head gasket, knowing that a new reliable design was available at extra cost. These kinds of decisions increased short term profits for the company but resulted in upset customers that would turn to a competitor to buy their next car.
