The discussion begins by unpacking what the Sickle Cell Disorder is, how it affects the body, and the difference between carrying the Sickle Cell trait and living with the condition. Jeannine shares her personal experiences of growing up with sickle cell disease and the journey that led her to become an advocate, while Mary reflects on her work as a Healthcare and Design Researcher and as a founding member of the Imperial Sickle Cell Group. Together, they explore the importance of education, representation and community-led initiatives that are helping to improve understanding of the condition. The conversation then turns to the life-saving role of Blood Donations, examining how transfusions support people living with Sickle Cell and addressing some of the most common myths and misconceptions that prevent people from donating. The panel also discusses the current shortage of Black blood donors and explains why ethnically matched blood is often essential for Sickle Cell patients. Through powerful personal stories and expert insights, Jeannine and Mary encourage listeners to recognise the impact of a single donation and highlight the collective responsibility we all have to support those affected by Sickle Cell. The episode concludes with a call to action, highlighting ACS's upcoming blood donation initiative and how listeners can get involved.
