In this talk, I address the delicate balance between two fundamental principles that determine a Muslim's stance in the face of wrongdoing. On one hand, there are verses and hadiths that command us not to remain silent when we see evil, oppression, and injustice; on the other hand, there are religious standards that forbid backbiting, prying, gossip, and spreading the faults of others. So how can these be balanced? Is every criticism a source of discord, or is every silence a virtue? I evaluate this question, frequently encountered in all communities and groups, especially the Hizmet movement, within the framework of the Quran, Sunnah, and Islamic ethics; we discuss the ethics of criticism, the method of advice, and the principle of "not turning one misfortune into another."
