Not every crisis means war, but war is definitely a crisis. So we decided to talk about crisis management with Ron Boire, Columbia Business School MBA alumni, partner at Valize, and principal at the Upland Group. We asked Ron to share his own experience, which is obviously different from the staff that Ukrainians go through right now. However, if you are ready to act fast in different crisis situations, it can be really helpful at the moment. So here is some piece of information from our conversation: • Every person is a leader in some way. There is no such thing as just leaders or just doers. Leaders do and doers lead. So it is critically important that everybody thinks that they have a role in leading through a crisis, taking action, making decisions, and making things happen. • Leading from the front includes being transparent, it means telling the truth even when it really hurts. • Things can change, so your plan should do too. A new essential business or partnership might require that you revisit your crisis plan. • We didn’t plan it, we didn’t know it was going to happen, but we had a list of the things that could happen, and we worked through those lists and created a catalog of those things. • You can plan all you want, but when something happens, it’s always different, so having the flexibility once your plan is in place is absolutely critical. During the discussion, Ron shared his stories about such crises as 9/11 attack on New Your and its impact on business. Another example was such a disaster as hurricane Catrina. There are too many types of crises that are predictable or not, which can possibly happen to us.
