Cochlear implants work differently: they bypass the damaged part of the ear and stimulate the auditory nerve directly. Cochlear implants take over the function of the damaged sensory hair cells in the inner ear.¹⁻³ A cochlear implant system consists of two components: an external sound processor; an inner ear implant, which is surgically placed under the skin. The implant contains an electrode array that is inserted into the cochlea. Together, the sound processor and the implant bypass the damaged part of the ear and transmit sound directly to the auditory nerve. ▬About Cochlear▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ As the world's leading provider of implantable hearing solutions, we have helped people of all ages lead fulfilling and active lives with more than 750,000 hearing implants: Being able to hear has brought them closer to their families, friends, and communities.
