The Greatest Carry Jobs in Baseball History

Baseball is probably the hardest major team sport for one player to carry. In basketball, one superstar can dominate both ends of the court. In football, an elite quarterback touches the ball on every offensive snap. But baseball simply doesn’t work that way. Even the greatest player in the world only gets four or five plate appearances a game, and if he’s a position player, he never even touches the ball on defense unless the ball is hit to him. But every once in a while, a player contributes such an extraordinary share of his team’s value that it’s almost impossible to imagine that team succeeding without him. Those are the seasons we’re looking at today. Specifically, we’re looking at every World Series champion since 1901 and ranking the player who accounted for the largest percentage of his team’s regular-season FanGraphs WAR. The higher that percentage, the more dependent that championship team was on its superstar.
