He Came Back Empty-Handed | The Story Behind رَجَعَ بِخُفَّيْ حُنَيْن | Lugha wa Hikma
Some Arabic proverbs hand you their meaning at the door. Others ask you to step inside and stay a while. رَجَعَ بِخُفَّيْ حُنَيْن belongs to the second kind. A classical proverb still alive in formal Arabic and everyday dialect today, though the phrase has long outlived the story that produced it. In this video we go back to that story — to al-Ḥīra, a city of pre-Islamic Iraq, to a shoemaker named Hunayn, and to a Bedouin customer whose endless bargaining set in motion a quiet and precisely designed act of revenge. We turn to the proverb as it appears in its original classical source, reading it carefully and dissecting the vocabulary, the grammar, and the psychology embedded in every line. At Qasid, we believe that serious Arabic study cannot live on grammar and vocabulary alone. Proverbs are where the language keeps its memory and its wit, and learning them is how Arabic stops being a system to decode and becomes a culture to inhabit. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ A note for students who have studied Arabic before. You may notice two points in our treatment that differ from what you have encountered elsewhere: our rendering of the conjunction ثم, and our description of تاء التأنيث الساكنة as an attached pronoun. Both are deliberate. The Arabic linguistic tradition is vast, and almost every rule travels with its exceptions and competing scholarly opinions; sound teaching simplifies first and complicates later. We sometimes tell our students, half in jest, that learning Arabic is a series of half-truths, each stage offering a picture complete enough to build on, with the next filling in what the last set aside. Both choices above are well attested, and both serve the learner well at this stage. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ This video is the first in Lugha wa Hikma | لغة وحكمة — Where Language Meets Wisdom, a new series from Qasid Arabic Institute devoted to the proverbs, idioms, and turns of phrase in which the Arabic language keeps its memory and its insight. Each entry takes a single saying and follows it back to its origin: the story that produced it, the vocabulary it carries, and the habit of thought it has preserved across centuries. The companion article is available on the Qasid blog: https://www.qasidonline.com/blog/retu... ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Based in Amman, Jordan, Qasid Arabic Institute is known for rigorous instruction, small class sizes, and a serious, academic approach to Arabic. For twenty-five years, its faculty have taught students from around the world — many of whom now work as diplomats, researchers, journalists, educators, and humanitarian professionals.
