Neurodevelopmental disorders is the title of the first major chapter of disorders in the DSM-5. All disorders included there are conditions that arise early in development and result in impairments observed as delays compared to peers of the same age and background. They can have specific or very broad impacts. Among neurodevelopmental disorders, we have some subcategories, which are grouped together because the delays/deficits are related to specific domains of functioning. Intellectual disabilities are disorders that involve impairments related to intelligence in general; language disorders, to language. Autism spectrum disorder is related to both delays or deficits in communication and social interaction, as well as restricted patterns of interests. Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder involves difficulty controlling attention and/or behaviors. Motor disorders involve difficulties in motor development. Furthermore, specific learning disorders relate to difficulties in the domain of learning certain specific aspects of academic development. Neurodevelopmental disorders emerge early in life and tend to persist, impacting the lives of those affected. Their origins, like all mental disorders, are multifactorial, but genetic factors, care during pregnancy, and environmental factors appear to be particularly relevant.
