On April 26th, we had a wonderful guest on MRO TV's "Atta." We were joined by Kanazawa City-born soprano singer Mai Tsugumi, known as the "GSDF Diva" and a member of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force Central Band, and her conductor, Vice Commander Masayoshi Shibata. Tsugumi, who is currently visiting Kanazawa to perform at the Wind and Green Music City Music Festival, loves her hometown and visits it whenever she has time. To capture Tsugumi and Vice Commander Shibata's daily lives, "Atta" cameras went undercover to the Central Band's base of operations, Camp Asaka. MRO Reporter Reiro Matsumura: "We've come to Camp Asaka, which straddles Tokyo and Saitama. Since Vice Commander Shibata of the Central Band and "GSDF Diva" Mai Tsugumi work here, we thought we'd do some undercover reporting." We visited the Central Band Headquarters. The garden tree in front of the building is a treble clef. Can you guess? The Central Band was formed in 1951 as the musical band of the National Police Reserve, the predecessor of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force. It is the band that represents the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force. Lieutenant Colonel Masayoshi Shibata, Vice Commander of the Central Band: "Thank you for coming all the way." Reporter Matsumura: "Is something starting?" Shibata: "We're about to begin training for the Central Band's special honor guard." Performing at "special honor guard" events, such as welcoming state guests, is an important mission given exclusively to the Central Band. Meanwhile, Tsugumi was practicing her voice on the piano. Reporter Matsumura: "They're practicing in the main concert hall for the Music City Music Festival. Ah, here we are, the Central Band Ensemble. And here's our 'GSDF Diva,' Tsugumi Mai." This was the first day of practice for the "Showa Song Competition," a program in the "Ishikawa-Kanazawa Wind and Green Music City Music Festival," in which the Central Band Ensemble will be performing. The event took place in a friendly atmosphere. Tsugumi: "Thank you for welcoming us to Camp Asaka." Matsumura: "Do you always practice here?" Tsugumi: "Yes, we always practice in this ensemble hall." Matsumura: "You probably don't get many opportunities to show off to people back home, do you?" Tsugumi: "That's right, this is the first time." During lunch break, we follow Tsugumi, who eats her lunch in the practice room every day. We get a glimpse of Tsugumi's homemade lunch, which she eats every day in the practice room! What are the key points of Tsugumi's homemade bento? Tsugumi: "I'm particular about the komatsuna (Japanese mustard spinach) grown in Ishikawa Prefecture, sent to me by my mother. It really feels like I'm rushing to pack it every morning, even though I'm sleepy." Matsumura: "Who's that person behind you?" Tsugumi: "That's Sergeant Major Kojima, the pianist behind me." Matsumura: "Are you coming with us to the upcoming Ishikawa performance?" Tsugumi: "Yes, she's a pianist." Matsumura: "What do you think Tsugumi is like in real life?" Sergeant Major Kojima: "She's a natural." Tsugumi, who also serves as the PR officer, discussed the design of the Central Band's new Kintaro candy product. After the undercover report video, Tsugumi performed "Cotton Handkerchief," a song she will sing at the Gakuto Music Festival, in the studio. Tsugumi also attends Urasenke tea ceremony lessons every time she visits Kanazawa. Tsugumi is eager to take on the challenge of performing overseas in the future, and we hope she continues to cherish her hometown of Kanazawa and deliver her heartfelt singing voice to people all over Japan and the world!
