The four bishops ordained are: Pascal Schreiber, from Switzerland; Michael Goldade, from the United States; Michel Poinsinet de Sivry and Marc Happier, from France. Bishop Alfonso de Galarreta, the first consecrator, and Bishop Bernard Fellay—the only surviving bishops out of the four ordained on June 30, 1988, by Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, also in a schismatic act—laid hands on them. The SSPX consecrated the bishops citing the need to guarantee the continuity and very survival of the congregation, even with attempts at dialogue by the Holy See and warnings against a schism, made by the Prefect of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, Cardinal Victor Manuel Fernández, and Pope Leo XIV. “Punishments or censures have no value.” More than a thousand priests and religious, along with another 15,000 lay people, participated in the celebration, which began at 9:00 AM (local time). At the beginning of the liturgy, the superior of the SSPX, Father Davide Pagliarani, gave a brief speech in which he stated: “We are ready to pay any price to save the Church.” The superior of the SSPX spoke of a “totally exceptional circumstance,” since “from the Second Vatican Council until today, the Church authorities have manifested an attitude contrary to the faith and acted against sacred tradition.” “We consider that any punishments or censures against this act have no value,” he emphasized. In a statement published after the episcopal consecrations, the SSPX stated that it regretted that, due to the exceptional circumstances, these consecrations were conferred without the authorization of the Holy Father. “However, the profound joy that these episcopal consecrations inspire cannot be overshadowed,” the statement concluded.
