CREATING a tiny JUNIPER BONSAI TREE from a small nursery start. JUNIPER BONSAI TREES for beginners.
I take a Green Mound Juniper from nursery stock and turn it in to a Bonsai tree. It's got a long way to go. These Junipers are also known as Juniper Procumbens or Juniper Nana and are commonly used for bonsai. Originally I thought I might make a cascading bonsai style out of this tree. It had a really nice lower branch that would have had a nice flow over the edge of the bonsai pot but I decided to take it in a different direction and make a more informal upright style bonsai after getting a different vision for this tree. Instagram: @HerbandRootsGardening Before you water, the soil should dry slightly. Juniper roots don't like soil that is too wet. Misting the tree is beneficial to increase humidity, especially after the tree has been repotted. Juniper Bonsai trees can be repotted every couple of years or longer using well draining soil mixture. Don't prune the roots too aggressively. Juniper Bonsai trees sold commercially are often Japanese Garden Junipers, also called Green Mound Junipers (Juniperus procumbens nana) just like the tree you see in this video. Other popular species are the Japanese Shimpaku (Juniperus sargentii), the Chinese juniper (Juniperus chinensis), the Japanese needle juniper (Juniperus rigida), the California Juniper (Juniperus californica), the Rocky mountain Juniper (Juniperus scopulorum) and the Sierra Juniper (Juniperus occidentalis). The foliage colors range from dark blue-greens to light greens and the foliage can either be scale-like or needle-like. Scale junipers usually have needle-like foliage when they are young (called juvenile foliage), the typical scale-like foliage appears later. After heavy pruning or bending, overwatering or other stress often juvenile foliage will grow again. It can last a few years until enough normal scale-like foliage has grown and all the needle-like foliage can be removed. #Juniper #Bonsai
