Former government commissioner to the military court, Peter Germanos, painted a bleak picture of the Lebanese reality, asserting that Israel has effectively achieved the buffer zone it sought and is not showing genuine enthusiasm for a ceasefire. Germanos believes that the chances of any ceasefire agreement holding are slim, arguing that maintaining or solidifying the status quo could be interpreted as tacit acceptance of the occupation of parts of southern Lebanon. Describing the internal situation, he stated that Lebanon is currently experiencing a true catastrophe, having suffered widespread destruction, and that rebuilding what has been destroyed and restoring the situation to its previous state could take many years. He also maintained that any path to salvation remains contingent on resolving the issue of Hezbollah's weapons and its role in the ongoing conflict. Germanos addressed the Iranian role in the south, asserting that Tehran effectively controls the levers of power in this region. He argued that the legitimate Lebanese authorities, particularly Speaker of Parliament Nabih Berri, should have worked to curb the influence of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard to prevent the current situation. He warned that the Lebanese arena is open to significant risks and crises in the coming period, noting that international competition, particularly between the United States and France, is negatively impacting the prospects for stability in Lebanon. He also pointed out that the most serious threat facing Lebanon today is the potential for instability to spread to areas stretching between Sidon and Jbeil, considering that this could open the door to serious security and political repercussions. In discussing regional developments, Germanos observed that Iran still possesses influential leverage at the regional and global levels, including the issue of terrorism, which it has not yet fully utilized, as he put it. He concluded by noting that the recent sanctions carry worrying messages for Speaker of Parliament Nabih Berri, warning that the escalating tension and anger could spill over into Lebanon and push the country toward further chaos and unrest.
