[UK Contempo CS 2061] 18 Jul 1975 Release date from booklet 'The New Singles' No. 583. Reviewed in "Blues & Soul" 165, 22nd July 1975 Hugely popular with the "Northern Soul" crowd and ranked #187 in Kev Roberts "Northern Soul 500" Soul Sam used to play it at Cleethorpes Pier that versions mix is noticeably different, bit more bass and balls to it, so made a point of locating one but it wasn't easy, In the end sold it with a load of other stuff when raising cash to buy other things to play. Be interesting to know how many of these are about? but certainly doesn't come up for sale these days. Rita DaCosta 70's Album.... Laid-back, smokey NYC vocalist Rita DaCosta is backed by a fantastic trio fronted by Cedar Walton on this lost jewel from the mid 1970s. The sound on this recording is crisp, clear and definitely shows off the talents of both DaCosta and Walton. Sung in Spanish, "The Boy From Impanema" wonderfully highlights a unique range in DaCosta vocal repertoire. The other tracks weave Walton's confident playing around DaCosta without either getting in the way or fading too far out of the arrangements. Cool record. A memorial for jazz songstress and composer, Rita DaCosta Turrentine, former wife of jazz giant saxophonist, the late Stanley Turrentine, will be held on Thursday, October 14 from 6 to 8pm at St. Peter's Church on E.54th St. and Lexington Avenue. The memorial will be hosted by on-air radio personality, Ed Williams. An internationally acclaimed star, Rita sang in several languages and performed with such jazz greats as Cedar Walton, Freddie Hubbard, Lonnie Liston Smith, Grady Tate, Bobby Timmons, Ron Carter, Jackie McLean, Jon Lucien, Harry Whitaker and the Monty Alexander and Danny Mixon trios. A plaque, honoring her achievements, is displayed at the Blacks in Wax Museum in Baltimore, Maryland. Rita semi-retired in the late 1980s and became a model, costumer, vocal and acting coach to such stars as Sarah Dash, Regina Belle, Diana Krall, Rhonda Ross, Nnenna Freelon, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Edna Holt, Cynthia Holiday, Gerre Samuels, Nina Lopez-Glenn and numerous other up and coming artists. Rita's last concert, hosted and directed by Roger Daniels, was last summer's Jammin On The Hudson at The Riverbank State Park. She was scheduled to perform with the orchestra in August. However, Rita died on July 12, after a brief illness. “The Ednah Holt Show” and now in 2010 Ednah is preparing another One Woman Show which will be called “The Incomparable Ednah Holt”, a title given by her late singing coach Rita Da Costa Turrentine. The show is in her memory.
