Diazonium Compounds | Organic Chemistry Lessons

In this lesson, we introduce diazonium (diazo) salts and several of their uses in synthetic organic chemistry. First, we learn to synthesize diazo compounds using sodium nitrite, and then how nucleophiles can be used to create substituted benzene rings. The Sandmeyer reaction using Cu(I) salts to generate phenyl radicals is also discussed. Finally, applications of diazo compounds in diazo couplings to produce synthetic dyes is studied.
