The application of the Neurorehabilitation Protocol developed by the Walk Again Project (WAP) team in Brazil, under the leadership of Brazilian neuroscientist Miguel Nicolelis, allowed chronic paraplegic patients in China to recover some leg movement, walk independently again, and show signs of reversal of brain atrophy caused by spinal cord injury, a phenomenon considered improbable until recently. The study was conducted at Xuanwu Hospital, Capital Medical University, in Beijing, in collaboration with the Walk Again Project, which has been developing neurorehabilitation studies based on the combination of non-invasive brain-machine interfaces, virtual reality, and robotic locomotion for over a decade.
