On February 19, 1915, the Allied fleet launched an attack on the Dardanelles. A general assault was launched on the straits on March 18, 1915. The mines laid by the Nusret minelayer proved decisive for the enemy ships. Turkish artillery, with its precise fire, prevented the Allied fleet from passing through the straits. The Allied fleet, which attempted to cross the straits by naval force, attacked the Dardanelles a month later with land forces. Fierce battles took place at Seddülbahir, Ertuğrul fort, İkiz Bay, Kerevizdere, Arıburnu, Chunuk Bayırı, and Suvla Bay. While Liman von Sanders and Esat Bülkat Pasha led these battles, Lieutenant Colonel Mustafa Kemal Bey came to the fore. As a result of these battles, which lasted over a year, the Allies were unable to break through to Çanakkale by either land or sea.
