De La Espriella y Cepeda se juegan sus últimas cartas buscando ganar la Presidencia
Just three days remain until the second round of the presidential elections in Colombia. The election day will begin next Sunday, and many political developments continue to unfold, including statements from the presidential candidates. Abelardo de la Espriella, as we heard in an interview with Juan Roberto Vargas, director of Noticias Caracol, called for respect for the results, which is the most important call being made today by various institutions. Meanwhile, Iván Cepeda, interviewed on Noticias RCN, once again stumbled, failing to provide a definitive answer on whether or not his government would convene a National Constituent Assembly. He simply said, laughing, "I don't know." The Ministry of Defense, for its part, maintains that the voter registration process, which is clearly occurring illegally by criminal groups in some parts of the country, is not intended to register residents to vote for a particular candidate on Sunday, but rather is solely for extortion purposes. While the Attorney General's Office opened an investigation into seven ambassadors of the current government following allegations that they are using their personal and embassy social media accounts to engage in electoral politics, purportedly in favor of presidential candidate Iván Cepeda, the continuity candidate, Interior Minister Armando Benedetti, who had been very reserved and cautious in recent days, addressed two key issues. First, he expressed his complete disagreement with Carlos Carrillo and Gustavo Bolívar, who have warned that if Abelardo de las Piedras wins next Sunday, the country will erupt in flames or there will be another social explosion. Benedetti called for order, stating that the government will respect the outcome, regardless of the result, as long as it is clear. He emphasized the need for calm and respect for institutions, while also detailing the decree in effect for the country this weekend. Most importantly, the alcohol ban begins throughout Colombia on Saturday at 6 p.m., except in Bogotá where it will begin at midnight. And finally, the National Electoral Council (CNE) settled the debate surrounding whether there is any impediment to Abelardo de la Espriella running for president due to his holding three nationalities. The CNE closed the door on that discussion and stated that de la Espriella is fully eligible to run for president.
