He discovered that astrocytes actually play a role in retaining and recalling specific memories! By elucidating the process of memory consolidation, the possibilities surrounding memory, such as retaining preferred memories, have expanded dramatically! While neurons react instantaneously and quickly forget, astrocytes react very slowly, and it's thought that they "consolidate" memories by carefully capturing them.
