My friend wanted to help and invited a girl from the street to our home. We cooked together and spent a pleasant evening – believing we were doing something nice for an acquaintance. Only later did she tell me that she wasn't an acquaintance at all, but a stranger, a street girl she simply felt sorry for. The real surprise came two days later: When I woke up in the morning and opened the curtain, she was suddenly asleep on our terrace. This experience illustrates the enormous cultural differences when living and emigrating in Asia. How people here think about privacy, helpfulness, and inviting strangers often differs fundamentally from our Western way of thinking. My girlfriend didn't initially see the situation as critically as I did.
