Frieren's Demons Are Irredeemable

It's funny, to a lot of people, the demons in Frieren: Beyond Journey's End are an unfortunate mark on an otherwise "perfect" series. But as someone who usually bemoans the existence of an antagonist who's "just evil," I find Frieren's demons fascinating—both as antagonists and as a narrative device. Researching for this video, I watched plenty of back and forth debates on aspects of morality, and whether it's even okay to unilaterally 'hate' demons. Ultimately I find it refreshing to have an enemy who is, no if ands or buts, irredeemable. Those thinking otherwise I think miss a cool take on an old idea. And I find it interesting that they're falling for the exact trap that the demons try to elicit—almost like their deceptiveness works on a weird 'breaking the fourth wall' kind of way. Maybe it comes down to what they're named—"demons." It implies some sort of fall from grace, a corruption from a pure baseline. Maybe it's human nature to anthropomorphize something in an attempt to make sense of the senseless. Of course, there's also always the chance that both me and Frieren are wrong. As much as she is wise, we have seen at times a certain stubbornness from her. I look forward to seeing more data points. _____________ End card design by Bakuretsu: https://bakuretsu.co/ Twitter:   / kamimamimashita   Patreon:   / kamimashita   Reddit:   / drjwilson   Anilist: https://anilist.co/user/drjwilson/ani...
