Komakiyama Castle, the First Castle Built by Nobunaga: The Origin of Modern Castles    • 信長が最初に築いた城　小牧山城   近世城郭の原点   Gifu Castle was occupied by Oda Nobunaga after he expelled Saito Tatsuoki in 1567 and made it his residence. Nobunaga changed the name of the area from Inokuchi to Gifu and began full-scale development of the castle. Until he handed the castle over to his eldest son, Nobutada, in 1576, Nobunaga used Gifu Castle as his base for his unification of Japan. Gifu Castle is unique in that it had a residence at the foot of the mountain on the west side, separate from the moat at the summit. Recent research by Gifu City has revealed the outline of the residence site. This video focuses on the residence site and also introduces the moat on the mountain. Gifu Castle is of great historical significance as the base castle from which Nobunaga moved from Komakiyama Castle and preached his Tenka Fubu (Unify the World with Military Power) and advanced toward unification, and as a castle that connected to Azuchi Castle.
