Rachmaninov himself had stopped attending church services, but his setting nevertheless conforms to the requirements of the Church, with ten of the fifteen sections based on three types of traditional chant. The texts are written and sung in Church Slavonic, the language of the Russian Orthodox Church. The start of Matins is a chorus in praise of God, which precedes the reading of the Six Psalms expressing man’s sense of loss and separation from God. This setting is full of the sound of bells as the word Slava (‘praise’) is reiterated. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Text: Slava v vyshnikh Bogu, i na zemli mir, v chelovetsekh blagovoleniye.
