Their new album reminds us that electro-jazz resides in a playground that still flourishes. Intoxicating and catchy riffs are mixed with experimental themes, asymmetrical yet danceable grooves. Through the abundant and luxuriant vegetation of the music, you can penetrate deeper and deeper, like in a jungle. The name of Ferdinand Doumerc may sound familiar to followers of BMC Records: the French saxophonist is the leader of Pulcinella, a band who has released three albums on the label. He is now joined by Pierre Pollet and keyboard player Bastien Andrieu, together, they seek a path blending the acoustic with the electric, the throbbing with the garish, the innocent with the wild. The album title is a French play on words: Gueule de Boa means “the throat of the boa” in English, but the pronunciation is the same as the French equivalent of “hangover”. – from the booklet text by Jean-François Sciabica Mowgli, une drôle d’appellation pour un groupe, mais un nom qui annonce la couleur. En effet, le personnage du Livre de la Jungle colle très bien aux intentions de ces trois musiciens : expérimenter en dehors des codes du jazz en créant un monde sonore original. Tout comme le héros de Kipling découvre une vie en marge de la société des hommes et s’épanouit auprès de nouveaux compagnons, Mowgli s’aventure là où on ne l’attend pas. Ferdinand Doumerc, saxophoniste de Pulcinella (dont trois albums sont parus chez BMC) également entendu dans Initiative H et dans les Headbangers, s’associe à Pierre Pollet (batteur de Pulcinella, par ailleurs membre du collectif de cirque Petit travers) et Bastien Andrieu, claviériste (membre du groupe d’électro tropicale Reco Reco et du Parti Collectif). Ensemble, ils cherchent une voie mêlant l’organique et l’électrique, le pulsé et le tranchant, l’innocent et le sauvage. Ainsi naît Mowgli, un groupe revendiquant ses aspérités et son côté hors-norme. Leurs premiers pas débouchent sur un disque autoproduit (Ivre de la Jungle, en 2015), puis avec le soutien du réseau OcciJazz, une nouvelle création voit le jour : Gueule de Boa.
