Hébreux 11:1 : La signification grecque du mot « foi » est souvent mal comprise par les chrétiens.

The Greek word translated as “faith” in Hebrews 11:1 doesn’t mean blind belief, emotional certainty, or forcing oneself to be strong. That word is pistis, and the Epistle to the Hebrews uses it to shift the weight of faith from the believer’s feelings to the reliability of the God who has spoken. This is important because Hebrews 11:1 follows Hebrews 10, where believers are weary, pressured, ashamed, and tempted to back down. Faith isn’t defined here for comfortable people looking for a catchy slogan. It’s given to weary Christians who need to know what sustains them when obedience is demanding, the promise is still unseen, and turning back would be easier. The Epistle to the Hebrews gives faith real significance. Pistis means confidence and assurance. Hypostasis means present assurance based on future hope. Elenchos means conviction forged by the word of God, even when the result is not yet visible. Biblical faith is not a denial of reality. It is a refusal to let visible pressure become the supreme authority. The Epistle to the Hebrews shifts the focus from measuring the intensity of our own emotions to contemplating the faithfulness of the One who promised. Then, Hebrews 11 illustrates concrete faith. Abel worships God, and the epistle affirms that his testimony still resonates after his death. Noah prepares before the rain. Abraham lives in tents awaiting the city that God is building and creating. Sarah receives strength because she recognizes the faithfulness of the Promised One. Moses refuses the treasures of Egypt because faith redefines the concept of wealth. The Epistle to the Hebrews also honors those who have suffered without visible deliverance in this life, showing that true faith is not measured solely by a quick breakthrough. Finally, this chapter leads us beyond the witnesses to Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith. Hebrews 11:1 does not invite us to feign steadfastness. It calls us to persevere in trusting in a faithful God while fixing our eyes on Christ, who endured the cross, scorned shame, and fulfilled faith. 📖 KEY VERSE Hebrews 11:1 and Hebrews 12:2 — “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see,” and “fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith.”
