This time, I'll be focusing on rhythm, particularly the triple strum used in Hawaiian music, and I'll be even more critical than usual. In previous videos, I've questioned the Japanese ukulele lesson scene, which has neglected such musical foundations, by ignoring chord structure, memorizing chords as mere "shapes," and simply moving on without considering their musical structure. (Can you be a fishmonger without knowing anything about fish? Can you be a lawyer without knowing the law? And yet, when it comes to the ukulele, it somehow seems like people without a basic musical background are allowed to teach it. This is the situation I'm questioning.) This problem isn't limited to sound structure; the exact same thing happens with rhythm. There are countless videos explaining so-called "triplet strums," but I feel that too many of them skip over these fundamental processes and only teach the strumming procedure as a final "exit." This is the same as memorizing English conversation by heart. You might be able to use it in the moment, but it's not applicable and doesn't lead to a true understanding of music. As long as both students and teachers continue to pursue easy, immediate results—"instant to play," "easy," and "relaxing"—I believe the ukulele will never be recognized as a "normal, proper instrument." Every instrument requires a certain level of rigor in the learning process.
