Protect Your Inner Child, Don't Regress, Infantilize!

The shared fantasy is a space for interactions between two children: the narcissist and YOU. But infantilism is narcissist’s natural state while the partner is enticed or coerced to regress to an infantile state. This asymmetry leads to fascinating consequences. The intimate partner's inner child is parentified (because she sheds her adulthood) and it can then parent (mother) the narcissist. The shared fantasy is doomed to fail because the narcissist expects his partner to act as both parent and infant. He is setting her up for failure. Narcissist cannot tell the difference between adult and child, so he sees no contradiction in demanding the impossible and in expecting his mate to be both simultaneously. Yet, he anticipates and precipitates the partner’s failure in order to bring on separation (devaluation-discard) and individuation.
