All this time was spent making the technology in "Avatar: Path of the Water" even more innovative than that of its predecessor. While the water scenes in the first film were shot on a dry set, for the sequel the director and his crew built a motion capture system that works both underwater and on the surface. But to get the clearest reference shots possible, the cast had to learn to hold their breath underwater. This way, Sigourney Weaver and Kate Winslet could act underwater without worrying about air bubbles obscuring their faces. The crew was also able to translate the cast's performances (Sam Worthington, Zoë Saldana, Stephen Lang) onto their Na'vi characters with even greater precision, thanks to a new dual-camera headset designed for "Alita: Battle Angel" (2019). Tools created specifically for "Way of Water" allowed the crew to see computer renderings of a scene as they filmed it, helping Wētā FX arrange digital elements alongside real-world ones. With a new system that allows for the animation of deeper layers of a character's face, visual effects artists were able to create more precise CGI facial expressions. The new system couldn't exist without the cinematic advances that occurred during the wait for the sequel, such as Gollum in "The Hobbit" films (2012 to 2014), Caesar in "Planet of the Apes" (2011 to 2017), and Thanos in "Avengers: Infinity War" (2018) and "Avengers: Endgame" (2019).
