RR8021 CUBA REFUGEES AND THE ECONOMY

(23 May 1980) Tens of thousands of Cuban refugees have flooded into the United States in recent weeks. The Cuban government says anyone who doesn't support the revolution is free to leave; the United States is finding it difficult to cope with the large numbers, and claims criminals and social undesirables are being dumped on it. The exodus can only create more problems for the Cuban economy, already heavily subsidised by its Soviet and East European trading partners. But President Fidel Castro remains defiant. He blames the United States for Cuba's problems, and continues to support revolutionary movements in Latin America and Africa.
