It’s getting crazy in the canyons
ICYMI: There’s a war going on in the car world over how people can’t stop crashing on America’s best driving roads. Who’s right and who’s wrong? Let’s dig in. [Download the FREE Upside App here https://yt.link/ldJuccQ and use code THEDRIVE to get an extra 25 cents back per gallon on your first tank of gas! Thank you Upside for sponsoring this video!] Thanks to social media, places like Tail of the Dragon and Angeles Crest Highway have become world-famous destinations for car enthusiasts looking to cut loose. It’s a lot cheaper and easier than getting to a race track these days, and these roads almost feel designed for fast driving: incredible curves, little traffic, and almost no police presence. So every week, thousands of drivers hit these roads to push their limits and post videos of their runs online. Problem is, lots of these videos are showcasing truly dangerous driving. Even worse, a lot of them don't have the skills to match their ambitions and end up crashing. As those numbers rise, lines are being drawn in the car world. Some think it’s funny and harmless; if some idiot goes too hard and hits a tree, that’s their problem. Or if you cut across the double yellow line when there’s no oncoming traffic, who cares? Meanwhile others feel like the attention this is getting is becoming a massive liability for the entire community. And efforts by the latter to police the former—most notoriously by The Canyon Carver on Instagram—have been met with ridicule and accusations of gatekeeping. It should be a simple idea, drive safe and have fun so everyone can enjoy these roads. But the fact that it’s becoming a flash point says a lot about the state of car culture today. We’ll just say this: if we as a community can’t figure out how to police ourselves, the actual police will. And no one wants that.
