Can green roofs save urban wildlife? Witnessing the Black Redstarts

This video showcases a remarkable moment - my first encounter with breeding Black redstarts on a thriving biodiverse green roof in London. While I had previously observed them visiting green roofs, capturing footage of them actually on a green roof had eluded me. This particular green roof started as a sedum roof and was transformed into a biodiverse haven two years prior. Although the pair did not nest on the building, the green roof proved to be vital foraging habitat for these protected species. What makes this even more significant is that the green roof was specifically installed to support the Black redstarts. Prior to construction, a pair used to breed on the site, making it a testament to the success of our conservation efforts for this species. This achievement highlights the importance of delivering biodiversity, which has been a driving force in my work over the past 27 years in London, the United Kingdom, Europe, and beyond. The green roof houses a diverse array of wildflowers, sedums, and grasses, serving as a refuge for invertebrates in the heart of the city. This video demonstrates urban biodiversity in action and exemplifies how green roofs designed with nature in mind can provide a sanctuary for both rare and common species within a major global metropolis.
