The Green Town Sanatorium is probably Magnitogorsk's most famous abandoned building. Today, Green Town is a typical abandoned Soviet-era sanatorium, a typical Soviet-era abandoned building. Unlike other abandoned buildings in Magnitogorsk itself and in the surrounding area, the abandoned Green Town Sanatorium is relatively well-preserved. It consists of two buildings, two-story structures. Many other abandoned buildings in Magnitogorsk are nothing more than piles of construction debris. So, the abandoned Green Town Sanatorium is quite an interesting site. The history of Green Town Sanatorium dates back to 1955. A bas-relief with this very date, 1955, is located on the surviving section of the club-dining room. Until recently, the abandoned sanatorium's grounds included two former residential buildings, a treatment building, a club-dining room, and a transformer vault. Part of the club-dining room and one of the buildings remain. There's also at least one underground structure on the abandoned sanatorium grounds. A veritable dungeon. When we entered this underground structure, we initially mistook it for a bomb shelter, but it later turned out to be a vegetable storage facility. It's believed that the abandoned Magnitogorsk sanatorium, Green Town, has a twin—the Yuzhny Sanatorium. But in fact, the Magnitogorsk Yuzhny Sanatorium isn't a twin of Green Town, but a younger sibling. After all, the Yuzhny Sanatorium was built almost a decade after Green Town, and unlike that abandoned structure, the Yuzhny Sanatorium is still operating normally. As for the reasons for the closure of Green Town, or why it was abandoned, there's a common misconception that Green Town was built in an ecologically unfavorable location. Here on the map, we show that this isn't entirely true, and the reason the Green Town sanatorium was abandoned lies elsewhere. Specifically, since its construction, the Green Town sanatorium hasn't been reconstructed, nor have its old buildings been renovated or new ones built. So, Green Town gradually fell into disrepair and was abandoned.
