They Said Her Father's Tool Shed Was Junk — One Blacksmith Knew What Was Hanging on the Wall

When the estate sale company put two-dollar tags on twelve old tools hanging on the south wall of Vern Alcott's tool shed, his daughter Fern didn't know what they were either. Then blacksmith Cal Briggs came through the open door and named every one of them. An 1890s cabinet card photograph showed Fern's great-great-grandfather August Alcott standing beside an anvil in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, the same tools arranged on the wall behind him. Collector Roy Estep offered $6,800 for the set. Fern declined. She called Cal Briggs and asked him to teach her what the tools were for. There was an anvil in the barn.
