Japan, an island nation surrounded by the sea, is becoming a "fish-deprived country." Fisheries and aquaculture production has been declining since peaking in 1984, falling to less than one-third of its peak in 2021. The depletion of marine resources, attributed to overfishing and climate change, is a global issue, not just in Japan. Innovative fish farming is garnering attention as a potential solution to this "ocean crisis." Kinki University has developed and launched the "Acerola Brihira," a hybrid of yellowtail and Japanese amberjack, by feeding it a diet containing acerola. The fish exhibits enhanced quality retention. Okayama University of Science has developed "optimal environmental water" that can grow both freshwater and saltwater fish by adding a special powder to freshwater. They are the first in the world to successfully cultivate the luxury fish "Kuetama" and "Tamakai" on land.
