First look at a 17" Philco Predicta B&W TV
This TV was brought to me by a friend, who said he could repair the chassis; but, wanted me to make sure the flyback transformer and CRT were good before he overhauled the chassis. The CRT test good; but, didn't do well on the life test. So, this is not one that I'd run into the ground by watching it all the time. Once the CRT was found to be operational, it was discovered that the fusible resistor in the power supply had crumbled apart. After that was replaced, there was no HV and that was caused by a defective HV rectifier tube. After the HV was restored, we still have no raster and the vertical sweep circuit appears to be dead (no surprise). When a signal is fed into the antenna input, we have sound; so, that tells us that the tuner and IF circuits are at least somewhat working. I also tested the horizontal phase detector diode assembly and it looks to be bad, as are a few tubes. The most common problems with these sets are the component combination assemblies (known as a copulate) that need to be rebuilt, using modern parts constructed on a perfboard, tube sockets that need to be replaced, and bad solder connections on the PC board. Unfortunately, these sets were not made for easy service and you need to remove the PC board from the metal frame, in order to get to everything. While the board is out, it's a good idea to check everything on it and replace anything that isn't right because you don't want to have to tear it back apart at a later date.
