Citing lyrics and a multitude of evidence, Ross defended his claim, arguing that Von's repeated reference to murder and his seeming personal gratification from the act aligned with the FBI’s definition of a serial killer. In spite of personal safety fears, Ross decided to create the documentary after Von's death shook him, being a fan of his music. He claimed the intention wasn’t to sensationalize or gain viral traction, but to question the truth behind the rapper's self-proclaimed body count. Although people in hip-hop have killed before, Ross says Von's behavior stood out due to his reveling in the acts - a characteristic typical of serial killers.
