The Dead Sea is a hypersaline lake bordered by Jordan to the east and Israel and the West Bank to the west. Some notable facts: It is one of the saltiest bodies of water on Earth, with a salinity of about 34%. Its surface is the lowest land elevation on Earth, roughly 430 meters (1,410 feet) below sea level. Because of the high salt concentration, people can float very easily in it. The mineral-rich mud and water are popular for spa and therapeutic treatments. The Dead Sea has been shrinking for decades due to water diversion from the Jordan River and mineral extraction.
