Matsudaira Nagachirō Nagayori, the sole surviving son of Tadanaga, the Suruga Great Councilor, who lost his life in the struggle for the shogunate against Iemitsu, lives under the guise of a wandering samurai, Hayami Chōsaburō. He resides in the bustling Ryōgoku district of Edo, working at the news publisher "Murakudō". During his lifetime, the second shogun, Tokugawa Hidetada, deeply favored his younger son, Tadanaga, over his elder son, Iemitsu. This favoritism led to a power struggle that shook the entire realm. Once Iemitsu secured the position of shogun, he relentlessly pursued Tadanaga, eventually driving him to commit suicide. However, Iemitsu found himself unable to kill Tadanaga’s son, Nagachirō. Instead, he intended to elevate him to the rank of daimyō. Nagachirō, fearing he might meet the same tragic fate as his father, rejected this path and chose to live in exile with two loyal retainers, Miyake Takubee (played by Tatsuhira Shimokawa) and Tamura Uheiji (played by Junpei Katō). Despite his noble lineage and tumultuous past, Nagachirō’s attempt to live quietly among the common people is fraught with challenges. Alongside fiery Oren (played by Yumiko Nogawa) and her companion Tatsusaburō (played by Shōhei Hino), as well as the team at Murakudō, Nagachirō takes a stand against injustice and evil. When the time for confrontation arrives, Nagachirō appears gallantly in a robe adorned with the Tokugawa crest.
