Anton Syutkin, philosopher, senior lecturer at the European University at St. Petersburg, and research fellow at the Laboratory of Critical Cultural Theory at the Higher School of Economics in St. Petersburg. "In the mid-1990s, after the collapse of the Soviet Union and the socialist regimes in Europe, the very phrase 'dialectical materialism' began to seem anachronistic. It was understood as the official philosophical doctrine of a now-defunct totalitarian state, which had lost all meaning as a result of the crisis of Marxism. Not only liberal critics but also the most creative Marxist thinkers began to seek ways to develop their own theory far beyond dialectical materialism. French thought of 1968 became a source of inspiration for the new generation of Marxists. However, it was in the mid-1990s that Slavoj Žižek, one of the most prominent critical theorists of the last thirty years, began to call his own philosophical project dialectical materialism. Of course, in Žižek's case, such a philosophical self-definition is in no small measure a provocation, but it's not the only thing that matters. Over the years, Žižek has been developing his system of dialectical materialism, in which Hegel's dialectic is first interpreted through psychoanalysis and Marxist critique, and then psychoanalysis and the critique of ideology are reconsidered in light of Hegelian dialectic. In this lecture, drawing on Žižek's texts, we will try to understand what it means to be a dialectical materialist today.
