Banyuwangi Station (BW) is a decommissioned railway station located in the capital of Banyuwangi Regency, specifically in Karangrejo Village, Banyuwangi District, Banyuwangi Regency, East Java. The station, situated at an elevation of +6 m, is part of the Jember Operations Area IX. It was formerly the easternmost railway station on Java and Indonesia before being replaced by Banyuwangi Baru Station (now Ketapang) in 1985, located 14 km north of Banyuwangi city, within the same complex as Ketapang Port in Banyuwangi. However, Banyuwangi Lama Station remained operational after Banyuwangi Baru Station was operational, until it was finally decommissioned in 1988. Banyuwangi began to become a target for the Staatsspoorwegen (State Railways) to exert its influence. This was clearly reinforced by the difficulty of transporting agricultural products from the Banyuwangi region, allowing them to be exported through the port in Panarukan. These difficulties were documented by Steven Anne Reitsma in her book, "Indische spoorweg-politiek." Reitsma stated that at that time, Banyuwangi was an isolated area, surrounded by steep hills that were impassable by village roads or cart paths. Consequently, the Staatsspoorwegen proposed a railway as a solution for transporting agricultural products. Ultimately, the decision to build a railway line began to materialize with the construction of the new Kalisat-Banyuwangi line in 1897. This railway line cut through the mountains, crossed two tunnels, and featured a deep bridge at the Garahan-Mrawan section. The Staatsspoorwegen opened the railway line to the public on February 2, 1903. Upon its opening, 3,000 families decided to settle along the tracks. This demonstrates the importance of the railway as an economic driver at that time. With the operation of the new Kabat–Banyuwangi Baru line on September 7, 1985, the station's popularity gradually faded. Passenger service at Banyuwangi Lama Station began to be transferred to Banyuwangi Baru Station (now Ketapang) because the ferry service from Banyuwangi to Bali was moved from the city center to Ketapang Port, leaving the station serving only freight trains. The station was officially decommissioned on March 31, 1988, as freight service was also moved to Banyuwangi Baru Station due to the construction of Meneng and Tanjungwangi Ports. This closure also included the decommissioning of the entire Kabat–Banyuwangi Lama segment.
