A Última Rainha de Portugal: A Trágica História de Amélia de Orleães #biografia #historia #portugal

Amélie of Orléans was the last queen consort of Portugal, wife of King Charles I and mother of Princes Louis Philippe and Manuel II. Born in 1865 in France, amid the exile of the French royal family, Amélie grew up amid aristocratic traditions and political instability. While still young, she married Charles of Braganza, heir to the Portuguese throne, and became queen in 1889. Her reign was marked by great challenges. Portugal was experiencing a serious political and economic crisis, and republicanism was gaining strength. Amélie, with her sober and dedicated style, tried to reach out to the people through social works and support for public health. However, this was not enough to contain the growing instability that threatened the monarchy. The most tragic moment of her life occurred in 1908. While returning from a public event with her husband and two sons, the royal carriage was attacked by members of the Carbonária, a revolutionary group. King Charles I was shot dead. The crown prince, Luís Filipe, was also killed. Only Manuel, the youngest son, survived the attack. According to reports, at the time of the attack, Amélia tried to protect Manuel with a simple bouquet of flowers that she was carrying in her hands. The scene became a symbol of maternal courage and despair. After the proclamation of the republic in 1910, Amélia was forced into exile for the second time. She lived the rest of her life in France, far from the country she had learned to love and serve. Even in exile, she remained faithful to monarchical ideals and kept the memory of the Portuguese monarchy alive. Amélia died in 1951, at the age of 86, being the last queen of Portugal and also the last living representative of the Portuguese monarchy. Her legacy remains as a symbol of dignity, strength and suffering in the face of turbulent times.
