The Norwegian Fjord Horse

Having met this beautiful horse breed in the Faroe Islands, we decide to follow up in their home country of Norway to find out more about them. One of the world's oldest and most pure breeds, the Norwegian Fjord horse is known to have existed in Norway since the end of the last ice age, and it is believed that they migrated to Norway over 4000 years ago. The horses were used by the Vikings as war mounts, and have been farm animals in Norway for hundreds of years. We visited the Øvre-Eide Farm in Bergen and spoke with farmer / owner Arild Øvre-Eide who is keeping his family legacy alive and prosperous for the next generation. The farm has been the cornerstone of his lineage for five generations and he talks about the Norwegian Fjord horse and the Dole horse as integral parts of the sagas of the land. Tiril Ramsdal, who works with the horses, gives an in-depth history of the Fjord horse and comparison to the Dole, with quite a few "fun facts" thrown into the mix.
