An Unlikely Duo (Live Version)

An Unlikely Duo Judges 3-5 Last week we looked at the life and leadership of Ehud, the second judge to break the cycle of apostasy in Israel’s history. After his death, Israel again did evil in the sight of the Lord. So, the Lord gave them over into the hands of Jabin, the King of Canaan. For 20 years he oppressed the children of Israel. Deliverance would come next through the Judge Deborah and a warrior named Barak. Shamgar and Jael I want to look at the lives of both Shamgar and Jael this morning. Why would I connect these two stories? Because the Bible does. In chapter 5 we have a song of worship sung by Deborah after the deliverance of Israel. In the song she describes the condition of the nation prior to her rise to power. Judges 5:6-7 “In the days of Shamgar, son of Anath, In the days of Jael, the highways were deserted, And the travelers walked along the byways. 7 Village life ceased, it ceased in Israel, Until I, Deborah, arose, Arose a mother in Israel. So, their lives are connected in the Bible. They are connected by a shared experience of having lived through oppression. In a way they have a common mission in that they were used for the deliverance of Israel. Shamgar in the south, and Jael in the north.
