The Nehru Trophy Boat Race, Nehru Trophy Valam Kali (also spelled Vallamkali), is one of the fine tourist attractions of Kerala. The event is held on the second saturday of August every year in Punnamada Lake near Alappuzha district of Kerala state. Among all the races, competition of Chundan Vallams (snake boats) remain the most prominent one. And it is because of this overwhelming popularity of Chundan Vallams that the competition also got the name 'Snake Boat Race' in English. Other categories of boat race include Churulan Vallam, Iruttukuthy Vallam, Odi Vallam, Veppu Vallam (Vaipu Vallam), Vadakkanody Vallam and Kochu Vallam. The event started in 1952. While visiting Kerala in that year, Nehru was moved with deep excitement, the roar and charm of snake boats. Thus he offered a rolling trophy to be awarded to the winner of the race. The trophy is a replica of a snake-boat in silver, placed on wooden abacus. The trophy carries the statement -'To the winner of the boat-race which is a unique feature of community life in Travancore-Cochin.' In the beginning, it was known as Prime Minister's Trophy and it was renamed 'The Nehru Trophy Boat Race' on 8 August 1964 after the death of Nehru.
