I stood on the sand of the sea and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns. On its horns were ten crowns, and on its heads was a blasphemous name. 2. The beast I saw resembled a leopard, its feet were like those of a bear, and its mouth was like that of a lion. And the dragon gave it its power, its throne, and great authority. 3. And I saw one of its heads as if it had been wounded to death. But its fatal wound was healed, and the whole world was astonished and followed the beast. 4. And they worshiped the dragon, who gave power to the beast, and they worshiped the beast, saying, “Who is like this beast? Who can make war with it?” 5. And the dragon gave him a mouth to speak great things and to blaspheme, and he gave him power to endure forty-two months. 6. And he opened his mouth to blaspheme and to blaspheme against [God], and to blaspheme His name and His tabernacle and those who dwell in heaven. 7. And he was granted power to make war against the saints and to overcome them, and to rule over every tribe, language, and nation. 8. And all who dwell on the earth, whose names are not written in the book of life of the [Lamb] who was slain from the foundation of the world, will worship him. 9. Whoever has ears, let him hear. 10. The one who leads others into captivity will be led into captivity, and the one who kills with the sword will be killed with the sword. Here is the patience and faith of the saints. 11. Then I saw another beast coming up out of the earth. It had two horns like a lamb, and it spoke like a dragon. 12. It exercised all the power of the first beast in its presence, and made the earth and its inhabitants worship the first beast, the one whose fatal wound had been healed. 13. It performed great signs, causing fire to come down from heaven upon the earth before the eyes of men. 14. It was in power to perform wonders before the beast, and by these wonders it deceived the inhabitants of the earth. It also spoke to the inhabitants of the earth to make an image for the beast that had been wounded by the sword and had lived. 15. It was in power to give life to the image of the beast, so that the image of the beast could speak and cause all who would not worship the image of the beast to be killed. 16. He causes all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and enslaved, to receive a mark on their right hand or on their forehead, 17. so that no one could buy or sell unless he had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of its name. 18. Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man, and his number is six hundred and sixty-six.
