Beautiful Countryside Walk from Castle Crag to Grange Village | LAKE DISTRICT, ENGLAND.

Join me on this stunning, autumnal Lake District walk from the top of the rocky outcrop Castle Crag overlooking Derwentwater to the picturesque village of Grange-in-Borrowdale. If you enjoy this video please consider subscribing to the channel    / @walktheworldaway   This is another gorgeous walk in a very special part of the Lakes which I always seem to come back to, and that area is the Borrowdale valley at the end of Derwentwater. It is so unique and always so picturesque no matter the season. Enjoy the glacial valley with erratic boulders scattered everywhere, the ancient woodland, moss covered rocks and tree roots and gushing streams and rivers. It really is a beautiful part of England. Castle Crag is a hill in the North Western Fells of the English Lake District. It is the smallest hill included in Alfred Wainwright's influential Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells, the only Wainwright below 1,000 feet (300 m). High Spy, the parent fell, forms part of the north-south ridge between Borrowdale and the Newlands Valley. Broadslack Gill is a small tributary of the River Derwent and flows the valley which separates High Spy from Castle Crag. The summit area is believed to have been an ancient hill fort, although the western section has been sliced away by quarrying. It can only be gained by means of a sloping crack to the south. The very highest point is a rock outcrop about eight feet high and twelve feet across. A memorial to Borrowdale men killed in World War I is affixed to the outcrop. The slopes of Castle Crag are extensively quarried with pits and levels on the northern and south eastern flanks. The summit has also been extensively worked. The High Hows Quarry later achieved fame as the home of Millican Dalton, the eccentric and self-styled "Professor of Adventure". Remarkably, the caves here formed his summer home from the 1920s until shortly before his death in 1947. Castle Crag may be ascended easily from the villages of Grange in Borrowdale or Rosthwaite, and can be combined with the lovely riverside walk along the River Derwent. The Allerdale Ramble long distance walking route runs along the valley of Broadslack Gill, whilst the Cumbria Way crosses the eastern slopes of Castle Crag. Holy Trinity is a small unique village church built in 1861 using the inspiration, design and decoration of one woman - Miss Margaret Heathcote. She built it to save the people of Grange having to go to the parish church up the valley. Rumour has it that she never thought the vicars that were appointed to the parish were quite good enough for the people of Grange so she managed to go through 7 different 'curates' in 11 years!
