🎙️ What is the real purpose of secular intellectuals' religious practice? Imran Raihan ReThink Podcast 🎙️ To understand the current intellectual crisis of Bengali Muslim society, we have to go back to the period of colonial rule. After the collapse of the Muslim regime, not only political power was lost, but also the social security of religion was lost. Under British rule, there was no state structure left to prevent attacks, confusion and distortion against Islam. During Muslim rule, education was an integrated system of religion and the world. Scholars were involved in the administration of the state and society operated within Islamic principles. During the British period, this system was broken and a secular education system was introduced. As a result, Muslim society became divided. In the words of Ibn Khaldun, the defeated nation imitates the victorious civilization. Under British rule, Muslim society accepted European civilization as the standard of progress. But this imitation was not of thought, but of lifestyle and culture. From here, the tendency to interpret religion in a new way in the name of “reform” and “modernity” bypassed the fundamentals of Islam. It was during this period that the modernist and secular intellectual class emerged in Bengali Muslim society. Although they accepted religion as a part of personal and social identity, they did not want to place Islam at the center of state, law and thought. As a result, their religious practice was mainly a means of maintaining social acceptability, not a reflection of religious observance. Begum Rokeya is a representative of this colonial intellectual trend. Although she played a sincere role in women's education, her thoughts were developed in an environment of Western philosophy and family Anglophilia. The evidence of her deep connection with Islamic scholarship is very limited. Many of her statements on the veil, women's rights and social order are incomplete and misleading from an Islamic perspective. It must be admitted that Muslim women were not completely illiterate before the British period. The real crisis began after the destruction of Muslim educational institutions. Begum Rokeya's work developed from that crisis, but it leaned more towards Western women's liberation thought than Islamic revivalism. In summary, the religious practice of secular intellectuals is not primarily for the sake of practicing religion, but rather as a strategy to adapt to social status, identity, and modernity.
