Sulphanilamide reacts with sodium nitrite in an acidic medium to form a diazonium salt. Hydrochloric acid is added to provide the required acidic conditions for the reaction. The titration is carried out at 0–5°C to prevent decomposition of the diazonium compound. Sodium nitrite solution is added slowly from the burette with constant stirring. The endpoint is detected using starch-iodide paper, which develops a permanent blue color due to excess nitrite. The reaction occurs in a 1:1 molar ratio, allowing the exact concentration of sodium nitrite to be calculated. This standardized sodium nitrite solution is widely used in the assay of pharmaceutical compounds containing primary aromatic amino groups.
