SS-Q53A Hydrophone Sonobuoy Teardown Part 1

(Long one) I contacted a very fantastic EBay seller when I saw an old unused Sonobuoy for sale. If you like this sort of thing, outdoor stuff, surplus items, check the seller out. Wasurplusinc is the store. See the link below. They sell all sorts of neat gear. Prices are very fair in my opinion. Quality and customer service are top notch. Can you imagine shipping a Sonobuoy? https://www.ebay.com/sch/wasurplusinc... Check out the store and see what neat gear you can use or tear down for cool parts. If you need some high quality rotary seals. https://www.ebay.com/itm/265204463967 or want to see what a military computer is like https://www.ebay.com/itm/265020903433 Personally I am eyeing the Crookes tube here. https://www.ebay.com/itm/333849038447 Where to begin...The engineering is fantastic. This was built in 1979 most likely. Pre digital telemetry for this sort of device. There is a neat link for the later version, the SSQ53B. It had a lot more computerized bits from what I can gather. Link-- http://prc68.com/I/Sonobuoy.shtml I don't know much about the technical capabilities and specific operation. I am not finding much online. If you have any info please post it below. Here is what I found on the same link as above. The SSQ-53A can listen at 90feet or 1000ft below the water. It will run for 1-8 hours. The only obvious adjustment I found was the 1-4 switch on the side. I can't quite see how to set the depth but I have a few theories. There are some holes inside that if they had pins installed, they would prevent the longer green wire from spooling, leaving the black, springy wire to deploy with the other "featherish" wire with the hydrophone at the end. In another video we will actually see about listening to the hydrophone. I was able to get it up and running. Once those are edited and posted, I will update the description with links. There is also a video coming up with testing the salt water battery and most importantly, I am going to set off the squib that will pierce the CO2 cartridges and inflate the float with the antenna. I am debating putting the parachute mount back in and watching it blow off too, so let me know what you think. Just fire off and let the float open or put the top back together and have it push the parachute mount off as well? Thanks for watching! \o/
