Ligonier Valley Railroad LAST RUN – Aug 31, 1952 | Full Farewell Journey from Latrobe to Ligonier
On August 31, 1952, the Ligonier Valley Railroad made its final run—bringing an end to 75 years of service through the heart of Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. This rare color film captures that historic day from a unique perspective: aboard the train itself. The journey begins in Latrobe, where a large banner stretched across the station reads “Farewell Old Friend”—a fitting tribute to a railroad that had faithfully served the region since 1877. A Pennsylvania Railroad train passes by on the eastbound track. Then, as our LVRR train departs, the camera records a continuous, moving portrait of a community saying goodbye. Along the route, people gather trackside to wave and watch history pass by: Residents line the rails, offering their final farewell Boys pause from fishing along a bridge to watch the passing train Small stations along the line are filled with onlookers, many gathered beneath farewell banners Midway through the journey, the train arrives at Idlewild Park, one of the oldest amusement parks in the United States and a longtime destination served by the railroad. A sign inside the park reads “Farewell Ligonier Valley Railroad”, and the film captures visitors posing for photographs—preserving their own memories of the day. After departing Idlewild, the train continues onward, again filmed from onboard as it passes more stations and well-wishers. The sense of occasion builds as the train approaches Ligonier, where what appears to be a ceremonial moment unfolds. At the Ligonier station, a crowd gathers once more beneath another “Farewell Old Friend” banner. Here, the film captures what seems to be the symbolic removal or breaking of a section of track—a powerful and deliberate act marking the official end of the line. In the final moments, the locomotive backs onto a switch, then slowly moves forward into the engine house—its final resting place—bringing both the journey and an era to a close. This film is more than a record of a railroad—it is a moving farewell to a way of life, a local institution, and a time when small railroads connected communities, industries, and generations.
